A late winter storm lashed several parts of Northeast United States. The system spared New York City and Philadelphia, but has hit other parts of the region with heavy snow and strong winds on Tuesday.

The storm brought chaos to travel as well as daily life. About 8,800 US flights were cancelled between Monday and Wednesday. Thousands of schools were shut. Besides, four deaths were reported in three states due to these extreme blizzard weather conditions. Connecticut banned highway travel for few hours and regional rail traffic was also suspended.

Though train service and flights resumed by Tuesday evening in some areas. Also schools will reopen in New York and New Jersey on Wednesday, but blizzard warnings will remain in effect for parts of New England.

According to meteorologists, more than 30 inches of snow have been recorded in parts of Upstate New York. Few parts of Connecticut, Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts also witnessed 20 inches or more. Areas along the coast from New York to Boston did not record as much snow as was expected. But some areas of the Northeast region have reported more than 30 inches of snow.

Along the New Jersey Coast, high winds pushed ocean water into neighborhoods, resulting in coastal flooding and beach erosion. Southern parts of New Jersey recorded about 2.3 inches of snow. Around 20 inches was recorded in the northwestern region of US.

Moreover, about 59,000 customers statewide, mostly in the northeastern part of Massachusetts, were without power on Tuesday night.
