Severe weather to end across flooded Mississippi Valley

March 14, 2016 11:34 AM |

mississippiAfter isolated flooding downpours that lashed the lower Mississippi Valley on Saturday, a fresh storm system affected and threatened the region with more severe weather on Sunday.

A small, yet strong storm has struck Arkansas and its surrounding areas with severe thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon into evening. The cities that were in the firing line of this storm on Sunday afternoon include Fort Smith, Texarkana and Little Rock, Arkansas. The threat will shift to Jonesboro, Arkansas; Memphis, Tennessee; and Greenville, Mississippi, in the evening.

Places south of the Interstate like Houston and New Orleans are likely to escape the wrath of the severe weather.

The strongest of the thunderstorms produced heavy rain, damaging winds and hail. There were some chances of tornadoes to form.

With the ground already saturated due to overflowing rivers from the recent spell of downpours, any additional rainfall could lead to more flooding in the region.

People in the region have been advised to exercise extreme caution even if no thunderstorm warnings have been issued. People with outdoor plans or engaged in flood relief efforts have been advised to seek shelter as soon as there is an approaching thunderstorm. The danger of being struck by lightning will also linger.

The exit of the severe weather will be marked by dry and relatively warmer days for the lower Mississippi Valley on Monday into Tuesday.
