Severe storms and rain kill eight in south China

#(1)CHINA-HUBEI-XIANGFAN-HEAVY RAIN (CN)Severe storms accompanied by heavy rains in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south China have wreaked havoc during the last few days. According to media reports, eight people have died in the incident, while three are missing. Out of the eight dead two were struck by lightning, one person died due to wall collapse and the rest died of drowning.

Around 7, 88,900 people have been affected across the region, including 11, 200 evacuated people.  Several hectares of crops have also been damaged in the storm. The storms have caused an estimated loss of about $68 million.

There was huge traffic disruption on Tuesday as 16 main roads had been impassable but traffic on 7 of the main roads had been restored by 4 pm local time. According to National Meteorological Center, it issued a storm alert for southern China on Sunday.

The outlook for the next few days is also not promising as heavy downpour is expected across parts of Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Hubei and Anhui provinces, including Guangxi. Heavy rains are also expected across the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which include Shanghai and the provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guizhou.
