North Sumatra province of Indonesia has been hit by massive floods as well as landslide. These floods not only claimed seven lives but also resulted in three to be missing, as per reports. Very heavy rains caused a river’s waters to breach its banks in North Tapanuli district which further led to the submersion of surrounding regions. In fact, around 6 feet of water resulted in inundation.
People affected by floods were being evacuated by soldiers, police and the disaster agency personnel. As per the agency’s spokesperson, there have been efforts to search for the missing ones. There have been pictures which show roads and houses along with electricity facilities that have been damaged.
A state of emergency for seven days has been declared so that emergency relief works can take place. There has been a post for shelters and logistics which have been set up. Over 2000 people have bene forced to leave their homes which remains flooded. Injured victims were taken to hospitals and clinics.
Aid distribution was hindered because of power outage, road blockage as well as the distance between the affected areas.
More rains are expected in February as well as per the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency. Every year, several people die because of floods and landslides due to the terrain of the region.
