Record breaking snow expected in Tokyo

Last week the snowfall in Tokyo wasn't much as the winter season this time has been mainly affected by the Northwesterly winds coming from the cold region of Magnolia. But, Tokyo which lies east of Honshu is protected by the mountains. Snowfall in the month of February is not a rare phenomenon but significant accumulations are not common. Last year the month of February had two separate snowstorms which dumped more than two inches of snow over the area.

Only last week Tokyo had experienced some accumulating snow. However, in the next 48 hours a much heavier snowfall is expected in and around Tokyo. Last week the accumulating snow was less than one inch.

A well-marked low pressure system is moving northeastwards from Taiwan and will reach east coast of Japan on Thursday. As the low pressure system becomes more intense it will cause widespread precipitation in the area covering southern Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. The snowfall across Great Tokyo area on Thursday can lead to travel disruption and delays till Friday morning. The snowfall could be as much as two to four inches and there would be a mix of rain and snow which will create slippery road conditions.
