Rains in Australia have been wreaking havoc and many parts of the country have been observing flooding rains per se. In fact, Sydney has witnessed a whopping 392 mm of rains in just about four days, which is thrice the amount that the city sees in the entire month of February.
Close to around 100,000 homes have observed no power, and flash flooding is expected. However, the good news is that there are just 17 fires in the region, which has been called the most positive news in a while.
Rains have improved the bushfire situation in many parts of the nation. In fact, fires in the Gospers Mountain has been declared out which was a mega blaze and burnt 512000 hectares. Currowan fire which burnt for 74 days has also been put out after it destroyed more than 300 homes and around 5,00,000 hectares.
In fact, heavy rain and intense weather could extinguish all fires in New South Wales by the weekend.
However, the only problem here is that areas which are bushfire hit may see flooding and fast moving waters are capable of carrying a lot of debris.
Former Tropical Cyclone Damien is continuing to wreak havoc across the Pilbara region of Western Australia, with Karratha Airport shut down throughout the morning and authorities warning the clean-up could take weeks if not months.
On the other hand, Cyclone Damien was a Cat 3 storm, but is now on a weakening spree as it is moving southward. However, the system is still capable of giving heavy rains which may result in flash flooding in Western Australia.
The worst sufferer has been the Karratha Airport which was closed after electrical damage and flooding. Thus, the closure affected hundreds of people. Lot of structural damage has been observed. As per the bureau of meteorology, severe weather is expected in parts of Gascoyne region for areas of Wiluna. Mount Magnet and Meekatharra.
