Rainy weekend in Midwestern, Northeastern US

August 11, 2016 4:13 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Rain and thunderstorms are likely to hit Midwestern and Northeastern United States with many locations witnessing heavy showers this weekend. This weather activity is due to a humid air mass persisting over Northeast and Ohio Valley.

Meanwhile the high pressure which was ruling the region has moved off the coast. This will not only bring back dry and humid conditions, but also thunderstorms.

Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected, however, many communities could also end up with 3-5 inches of rain by the end of the weekend.

The heftiest rainfalls may occur over the interior Northeast and Ohio Valley. While these rains will be of some help, flash flooding can also occur in areas where storms strike on a regular basis.

The threat for severe weather will be low. On the other hand, the strongest storms may produce strong gusty winds, capable of knocking down trees and power lines. Thunderstorms will be more during the afternoon and evening hours, also a shower or thunderstorm can occur at almost any time, due to the amount of moisture in the atmosphere.

Afternoon thunderstorm will bring some relief from the heat, but not the humidity. Temperatures could drop to 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit during these downpours.

Dry and humid weather is expected to return by the beginning of next week.
