Touted as much needed relief, Northeast US is likely to receive rains and thundershowers later in the week, followed by a blast of chilly air. This rainy spell will mark an end to the ongoing spell of unusual warmth across the region.

According to meteorologists, a powerful storm system is likely to develop across the Ohio Valley that will lead to significant change in the present weather conditions. The storm will start affecting Northeast US by Thursday and Friday and further into Quebec over the weekend.

The storm is likely trigger band of soaking rains and squally winds. As the system passes through, some heavy showers are likely across Eastern Ohio to western and northern parts of New York, Ontario and Quebec. Weathermen predict that the region might see torrential rains ranging from 55 mm to 100 mm.

New England may also witness intermittent rain. The system will continue to garner moisture from Atlantic Ocean, which may help it to intensify into a tropical storm Otto.

If this happens, we can expect significant increase in the rainfall over New England. Damaging winds of speed of 75 kmph will also be witnessed over the region that may gust higher than this along the coast.

Local authorities have advised people to avoid any outdoor activity on Thursday and Friday. Heavy rains may pose difficulties in terms of lowered visibility and inundated streets and roads.

Meanwhile, these rains are also of great importance in terms of drought. The region has been under the grip of drought, particularly New England wherein rainfall deficit is greater than 380 mm of rain since the beginning of the year.
