Since the last few days most parts of Sri Lanka have been receiving fairly widespread rain and thundershowers but, the intensity is heavier over the eastern parts of the country.
Initially a cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast was responsible for good rains over Sri Lanka. Now a low pressure area has developed over eastern part of the country, which will continue to give good rains for next 24 hours.
Thereafter, the low pressure area will move in a north-northwesterly direction. The low pressure system will gradually intensify into a well-marked low pressure and will move away from Sri Lanka. Therefore rain will reduce after 24 hours. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday Batticaloa received 149 mm of rain, Nuwara Eliya 13 mm, Kurunegala 12 mm, Pottuvil 11 mm and Tainwmalee 3 mm.
