Powerful Storms to inundate Northwestern US, winter ahead

US Storm

At least, three strong storms are likely to blast the Northwestern United States late this week into early next week. These storms are possibly an early sign of a La Niña-like pattern for the winter ahead.

As per weather experts, these storms will accompany torrential rains, snow and gusty winds over regions of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Northern California and Western Montana, with British Columbia into next week.

The first storm is likely on Thursday into Friday, bringing gusts between 40 and 80 mph on the coasts from northernmost California to Oregon and Washington on Thursday.

From Saturday to Sunday, the second storm may occur with ample amount of moisture and some of the remnant flow from Typhoon Songda, which is presently in the western Pacific.

Although this weekend the system may be non-tropical in nature, but by the time it reaches the Northwest, it could hit with the force and impact of a hurricane.

Oceans will quickly build to threatening heights ahead of the second storm. Beach erosion and coastal flooding may occur along the Washington, Oregon and Northern California coastlines. From Monday night into Tuesday, a third storm will follow.

During next Tuesday, many locations along the coast, with the Olympic range as well as the west-facing slopes of the Cascades and Northern Sierra Nevada, may witness at least 12 inches of rain.

Rain and wind from these storms could also reach as far south as San Francisco and the Bay Region.

Also, 1-2 inches of rain is expected in the agricultural areas of central Washington and Oregon with a few inches of rain possible farther to the east in Washington, Oregon, central and northern Idaho and Western Montana.

While the rainfall bring some comfort to the drought-ravaged regions, heavy rains may occur over coastal areas and along the slopes. People should be ready for flooding, landslides and road washouts as the series of storms will continue in these areas.

Heavy snow is likely to fall over the parts of the Northwest with high winds and tumbling temperatures from Thursday into Tuesday.
