Port Alberni under flood threat

November 10, 2016 12:36 PM | Skymet Weather Team

An array of rainstorms has swollen the Somass River near Port Alberni.

Due to this, a flood watch for the Sproat and Somass Rivers was upgraded to a flood warning late Tuesday, that means rivers have already started overflowing their banks. The rising water has also closed Highway 4 to Ucluelet and Tofino.

Flooding, or high flow conditions, are expected to persist through Thursday.

As of now, no serious flooding is expected in the city of Port Alberni. However, flood waters from the swollen Somass River has begun to surround homes in the Tseshaht First Nation on Tuesday.

The rain will possibly ease up on Wednesday and Thursday, but a few episodes of rain that has already occurred is still making its way down from the mountains around Port Alberni.

Another storm will head for British Columbia’s south coast on Friday. Heavy rainfall has hit the watersheds on the northern half of Vancouver Island over the recent weeks.

Amount of water in a one and a two-week period that has been observed than ever before just speaks about the continuous storm activity.

If the Campbell River rises over its banks, almost a hundred homes and industries may experience flash flooding.
