During the winter season, northern parts of Pakistan are normally affected by weather systems known as Western Disturbances. These systems also bring winter rains in North India.
This season so far, we have hardly had winter rains in the northern plains of India as well as Pakistan. Only the regions with elevations of more than 1500 ft. received rain and snow.
The plains have been mostly dry. However, the existing Western Disturbance and the induced cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan in India have given some rainfall in the plains of Pakistan and India. Light to moderate showers were witnessed during the last 24 hours.
Here’s a look the rainfall figures in Pakistan, in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday:
Among the hilly areas, Parachinar received 23.2 mm of precipitation, Saidu Sharif received 8 mm and Dir 5 mm of rainfall.
This spell of rainfall, the first winter rainfall of the season, could be attributed more to the induced cyclonic circulation. Accordingly, day temperatures witnessed a significant drop.
Temperatures in Pakistan
Day temperatures were seen plunging by 6 to 7°C on Tuesday. Most of the places in the plains of North Pakistan were observing maximums in lower-twenties so far. Rainfall brought down temperatures to mid-teens, leading to cold day conditions on Tuesday. Both Jhelum and Sargodha recorded 15°C as the maximum. A major drop in temperature was witnessed in Islamabad.
