Philippines braces for Typhoon Maysak

April 4, 2015 3:40 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Typhoon Maysak continues to weaken and has now attained the status of Category 1 storm in the Pacific Ocean. Currently, it is located 570 km east of Manila. The storm is moving in the westnorthwest direction at a speed of about 20 km/hr, punched with sustained winds of 120 km/hr and gusting to 150 km/hr.

Increasing vertical wind shear and proximity to the land will weaken the storm further. However, Maysak will maintain its status of a tropical storm at the time of landfall on Sunday. Thereafter, Maysak will enter South China Sea as a weak system.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from Philippines with typhoon Maysak just a day away from striking the country’s north-east coast. Storm surges, flash floods and landslides remain a potential threat.

Another storm can be seen following Maysak but it will carve out a different course. It is not likely to threaten Philippines.
