Pacific and Atlantic Oceans to remain quite for sometime

There are two oceans across the globe which host storms, namely the Atlantic as well as the Pacific Ocean. These storms have different names in different oceans. For instance, they are known as a hurricane in the Atlantic while they are known by the name of a typhoon or cyclone in the Pacific. However, there is no difference between these except the names.

Storms do not form 5 degrees north or south of the Equator and since a large chunk of the Indian Ocean lies in the proximity of Equator, storm formation does not take place over the region. Also, the southern portion of the Atlantic Ocean also do not see any storms as such.

Truly speaking, there is no calendar as such for formation of storms and they can show up anytime. However, there are favourable periods for the occurrence of stronger storms in the Pacific as well as the Atlantic Oceans.

For Atlantic Ocean, the hurricane season is between June 1 and November 30, while the Pacific typhoon season is between May 1 and November 30. Meanwhile, the peak time is between the months of August and September.

Usually, as around the second half of March, sun starts to get close to the equator and heat content increases in the oceans, signs of disturbances and some development begins by this time. However, strong storms do not occur even after mid-March.

At the moment, the oceans are observing a quiet period after storm Gita and Kevin lashed various parts of the world. For another two weeks or so, no storm system is expected to develop in either of the oceans.
