As the year comes to an end and transiting into 2016, the biggest snowstorm is set to strike eastern and northern portions of Turkey. Mus, Erzurum, Van and surrounding areas in eastern Turkey can expect massive amounts of snowfall. This is due to unseasonably cold air that will plunge southwards from Eastern Europe coupled with two storm systems coming in from the Mediterranean Sea.
Snow accumulation of upto 12 inches is expected across the lower elevation locations whereas, in the higher elevations snow accumulation could be in excess of 12 inches. Rainfall will occur south of these mountains from Gaziantep to Batman. This weather condition will prove hazardous for traveling purposes as both road and air travel disruptions are expected. This might hamper the New Year Celebrations.
As the cold air travels over warm waters of the Black Sea, spells of snowfall will roll into the Koroglu and Pontic mountains during the rest of the week. There will be significant snowfall in the mountains by the end of the week and moderate snowfall in the coastal cities like Samsun.
In Istanbul, snowstorm has started to affect and will continue during the first few days of the next year. The temperatures will also dip significantly across the region.
