Nepartak brings heavy rain in Taiwan, risk of flood persists

July 8, 2016 12:19 PM |

TaiwanSuper typhoon Nepartak, one of the strongest storms so far in the world, battered Taiwan on Friday morning, local time. The storm made a landfall sustaining strong wind speed that overturned cars, led to power outage and left a trail of destruction.

However, even after giving unprecedented heavy rain in a time span of mere few hours, storm Nepartak still threatens Taiwan by way of flooding rain and destructive winds. Nepartak that rapidly intensified into a super typhoon midweek, made a landfall in Taiwan about 5 miles southwest of Taitung City, Taiwan with estimated winds around 125 mph.

More than 300 mm of rainfall has been recorded over some parts of Taiwan in a mere 12 hours. Southeastern and east-central Taiwan will bear the brunt of Nepartak in next few hours as they might face excessive rainfall of 250 -500 mm.

Owing to flooding rain and alarming situation, schools and offices are closed in Taiwan.

More rain could fall in the mountains, triggering landslides and life-threatening flooding.  However, the same mountainous terrain will lead to weakening of Nepartak which will steadily head towards China. Nepartak will be equivalent to Category 1 hurricane when it hits China this weekend.
