Northeast Monsoon has not yet set in but good rains have already started over the country of Sri Lanka. During the last three to four days, Sri Lanka has received moderate to heavy rains with a few very heavy spells. Sri Lanka is a country which receives good rains in Southwest Monsoon as well as during Northwest Monsoon.

Presently, a Cyclonic Circulation is persisting over Southwest Bay of Bengal of Sri Lanka coast. Apart from this, a Trough is extending from Southeast Arabian sea to this circulation. Due to these weather systems, heavy rains are going on over the entire country.

If we look at the rainfall figures at some prominent places in Sri Lanka, then in the past 24 hours Jaffana received 81.7 mm of rain, Trincomalethe 32.9 mm, Badulla 32.1 mm, Vavunia 27.1 mm, Pottuvil 25.1mm and Kandy recorded 24.5 mm.

We expect moderate to heavy rains to continue over Sri Lanka until October 28. Thereafter, the Cyclonic Circulation will fade away and a prominent Trough is expected to develop over East Coast of India leading to decrease of rain activities over Sri Lanka.

Thereafter also, we expect light rain with one or two heavy spells to continue over the country. Weather will not go completely dry.

During Northeast monsoon between October to December, Sri Lanka usually receives good rains. Therefore, we can say on and off rainy episodes will continue until December with short spells in between.
