The super typhoon Meranti has become the most powerful storm of 2016. The storm has already shown its strength with high speed damaging winds and heavy downpour over Taiwan. Officials and residents are preparing for the worst as schools and offices in southern & eastern Taiwan will be closed throughout the week.
Officials of Maritime Port Bureau mentioned that the services were suspended for Tuesday and Wednesday and on Monday the ferry operators were helping tourists evacuate the islands.
The Super Typhoon Meranti is expected to give heavy rains of over 500 mm in south Taipei, especially over Kaohsiung. The damaging winds caused by the Super Typhoon Meranti can reach the speeds of up to reach 180 mph (290kmph) and gust even at a higher speed of 220 mph (350kmph).
Taiwan Water Corp. has alarmed the residents to store water as the storm may cause the quality of water to deter and disrupt the water supply during the week. Flights and trains schedule were canceled as the first rain bands arrived in the country on Tuesday.
The center of cyclone is within 500 miles of Hong Kong and could affect the territory.
Fishermen are advised to return to port whereas other businesses and residents along the coast are urged to brace for the typhoon.
