Meranti China 1

After battering southern parts of Taiwan and skidding past the country, Super Typhoon Meranti has made landfall over China on early Thursday morning. The storm hit near Xiamen in Fujian Province.

As soon as the storm made landfall, electricity in the Xiamen and many areas of Fujian Province vanished. As much as a million people are affected due to the unavailability of electricity.

The powerful storm raked southern Taiwan with drenching rains and dangerously damaging winds of up to 370 kmph which is faster than a Formula One race car. But when the storm hit China, it was comparatively less in intensity than that of Taiwan.

Less in intensity but lethal was the nature of the winds as the top wind speed observed was at 230 kmph gusting even at a higher speed of 280 kmph.

The power of Meranti has prompted Chinese officials to issue the highest possible warning for high ocean waves as they are prepared for the heavy overflow.

Heavy rainfall and flash flooding along with dangerous winds will continue over the region for the next 48 hours. Eastern China may even see mudslides at few places.
