Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to affect much of Germany this week. The ongoing severe weather activity has resulted in deadly flooding and lightning strikes.
While the thunderstorm activity across much of Germany will continue into Wednesday, this activity is set to intensify on Thursday and Friday. A storm system will move in from France through southern Germany into western Poland will lead to heavy rain and thunderstorm from Stuttgart and Munich to Dresden and Berlin.
On Thursday afternoon rain and thunderstorms will occur over Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria. A long period of six to 12 hours spell of rain, at times heavy is likely to continue well into Thursday night before it reduces in intensity on Friday. The strongest of the thunderstorms can cause hail and damaging winds. This spell of heavy rain will move northeastwards into Dresden, Leipzig and Berlin Thursday night into Friday morning. A similar six to 12 hour period of rain is expected across these areas. Travel delays are expected during morning hours.
The weather is expected to improve slightly on Friday. However, the downpours will affect during Friday morning with some showers expected during afternoon. Rainfall totals of upto 40 mm with localized amounts reaching upto 75 mm is possible. This is enough to cause flash flooding in some areas. Road, rail, water and air travel is expected to be disrupted.
Dry weather is expected during the weekend but there is a possibility of isolated showers on both days of the weekend.
