Iraq Floods Article

As per the health officials, almost 21 people have died and tens of thousands have been displaced by these extremely heavy down pours. The casualties occurred on multiple account of flash flooding, electrocution, collapsing of houses etc.

This is a very rare phenomena to be witnessed. Now, the weather system has moved away, and the weather conditions have also become better. However, it will take a while to get back to normal.

Geographically Iraq is situated in West Asia. During this time of the year, west Asian and Middle East countries are under the influence of Western Disturbances. These systems' origin is from far to the west and then they travel from west to east.

In our neighborhood i.e. in the Asian region, anywhere and everywhere the water bodies play an important role. Asian countries are surrounded by Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea and Black Sea.

For India, Western Disturbances get their energy from Mediterranean and Caspian Seas. Whereas, for Iraq the Western Disturbances get their feeding from only Mediterranean Sea. Black Sea is situated to the north of Iraq.

As per the experts, the only thing which seems uncommon is that these disturbances have strengthen up this time. Whereas, in the month of November they just make the beginning and are generally mild in nature.

On the contrary, excessive heavy downpours have been witnessed this time. This is not a seasonal thing to happen in Iraq especially in the month of November. It has been found that similar incident took place in the year of 2015 as well.

As per the records, northern belt of Iraq has been worst affected by torrential rains. The UN says, Nineveh and Salahaddin are the most affected regions, with many villages being inundated.
