Hurricane Nicole to threaten Bermuda with winds, rain, flooding

Nicole is likely to threaten Bermuda as a hurricane with the potential to cause damage and disruptions to daily activities by Thursday.

The system has transformed into a hurricane from a tropical storm on Tuesday afternoon while moving south of the islands this past weekend.

The storm is now expected to speed up and turn towards Bermuda during the mid-week.

As per weather experts, it is the same non-tropical system which was responsible for pushing Matthew away from the United States and will now pull Nicole northward this week.

Nicole is likely to be a 100-mph (160 km/h), Category 2 hurricane or stronger on Thursday when it will pass close to or right over Bermuda.

So far only Gaston and Matthew have made major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher) during the 2016 season in the Atlantic.

This week waves will build northward toward Bermuda ahead of Nicole. The primary impact from this storm to the islands will be in the form of building surf on Wednesday.

The point where the center of Nicole passes right over Bermuda or a few miles to the west is likely to bring the most hostile conditions to the islands.

Strong winds, heavy showers and coastline flooding are expected in Bermuda from late Wednesday night into Thursday.

Since 2012, the 2016 season has been the most active in terms of the number of known tropical storms in the Atlantic Basin. The tropical Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30.

There have been 14 tropical storms and six hurricanes so far this year in the Atlantic Basin. There are no clues of further tropical development across the Atlantic Basin into this weekend. However, there are some suspect areas, like the Caribbean.
