Hurricane Nicole heading for North Atlantic

Hurricane Nicole has left behind Bermuda, after lashing the region with damaging winds and torrential rains. It is now heading east-northeastward well away from Bermuda.

Nicole had made a direct hit on Bermuda, as the strongest hurricane to lash the Atlantic archipelago in the last 13 years.

Meteorologists are now expecting it to become a post-tropical cyclone or continue to remain a strong north Atlantic storm well till about the next week. However, it will not pose any direct threat to any land area now.

On Friday, Nicole was about 700 kilometers to the northeast of the British archipelago and was heading out to sea.

We can expect dangerous surf and rip currents over the coastal parts of eastern Canada. It is likely that Hurricane Nicole will lash the Grand Banks over the weekend with gale-force winds. Nevertheless, the wrath of Nicole will not be as much as it was over Bermuda.

The south-facing coastlines of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland could witness ocean swells of 2 to 3 meters, over the weekend.

Hurricanes of this intensity are rare in Bermuda. In fact, only 12 Category 3 hurricanes have been traced within 75 miles of Bermuda since 1899.

From an altitude of 252 miles, the International Space Station captured the views of Hurricane Nicole on October 13.
