A category 1 hurricane named Newton has already made a landfall over the South Baja California early Tuesday morning (local time). The hurricane is now expected to make another landfall over northwest Mexico’s mainland by early Wednesday before moving towards Southwest U.S.
However, there are possibilities of its weakening over dry, mountainous northwest Mexico later this week.
Warning alert for the hurricane along with winds gusting at a speed of 75 mph have already been issued for Baja California Sur, from Cabo San Lazaro to Mulege, including Cabo San Lucas.
As per forecasters, as on Monday (local time), Hurricane Newton was located about 125 miles south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. A hurricane guard is also active from Guaymas to Puerto Libertad, México.
Additionally, the hurricane is also likely to produce rainfall ranging from 8 to 12 inches over the southern Baja California and 5 to 10 inches in northwest Mexico. Furthermore, a total of 18 inches of pouring is expected over a few areas.
These torrential downpour are also likely to result in plentiful rainfall which could further lead to life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in the mountainous terrain and coastal regions including Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa.
This system is then likely to make an impact over the Southwest U.S. later this week as a tropical depression.
