Hurricane Earl has finally made landfall in Belize, Central America on early morning hours of Thursday. At the time of landfall, the maximum sustained winds were reported to be around 130 kmph.
Earl continues to pound the region with squally winds and torrential rains. The system is till sustaining its strength of the Category 1 storm and is likely to strike Mexico next via northern Guatemala.
However, as the storm moves further, the hurricane is expected to weaken slightly as it travels over land which does not provide much moisture for intensification.
In wake of the hurricane approaching, warning has been already issued to the Belize-Guatemala border, Puerto Costa Maya and Punta Allen. Gloomy dark clouds were seen engulfing Playa del Carmen, Mexico today morning.
Torrential rains are posing a great threat of triggering flash floods, mudslides and landslides, particularly in higher terrain. Weathermen predict, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Tabasco may get extremely heavy rains ranging between 200 mm and 300 mm.
Areas of Mexico and Belize are exposed to much great damage as it may see torrential showers of 450 mm as well.
Earl has already claimed around nine lives in Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Monday while passing through the Caribbean.
