Houston and New Orleans to get flooding downpours midweek

April 12, 2016 8:00 AM | Skymet Weather Team

A spell of quick rainfall will increase the risk of flash flooding and travel hazards along the western Gulf Coast at midweek.

Due to this severe weather, a new storm system will cause a spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms from central Texas to Louisiana on Tuesday night into Wednesday. These downpours are expected to affect the I-10 corridor from San Antonio, Texas to Houston to New Orleans.

The thunderstorms will first affect the Mexican border around Del Rio, Texas on Tuesday evening. These thunderstorms have the potential to be severe and cause damaging winds and hail. Chances of an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. This will turn to flash flooding on Tuesday night as the band of thunderstorms move over San Antonio and Houston.

A total of upto 75 mm of rain can be caused by these thunderstorms in just six hours or less. In areas of poor drainage flash flooding can occur. Rivers and streams can rise quickly and cause inundation of roads.

Even if flooding does not occur, the downpours will cause travel disruptions due to reduced visibility and slippery conditions of the roads. Air travel delays are also possible.

People in Houston can expect slow moving traffic on Wednesday morning before rain eases during the afternoon.

On Thursday the rain and thunderstorms will be confined from the central Gulf Coast to southern Georgia and Texas would experience dry conditions.
