Popular holiday spots in southern Thailand were hit by heavy flooding post heavy rainfall. An approximate of 14 people have lost their lives in the deadly floods.
Low pressure system brought heavy rain in parts of south including the islands of Koh Samui and Pha Ngan in the Gulf of Thailand. Floods have also wrecked the railway tracks and affected the transportation drastically which is not helping in the rescue operations. Trains travelling towards south of Bangkok were stopped at Thung Song in Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Such heavy rainfall can be attributed to the low pressure system which is circulating to the west of the country, above the Andaman Sea. The system has not developed to a full-blown tropical cyclone; the circulation has developed over the warm waters of the region.
The average rainfall for the entire month of December rounds up to 150 to 200 mm, but some areas have recorded up to 500 mm of rainfall in past few days. 1,245 villages in 18 districts in southern Thailand were hit by flooding on Sunday morning which affected around 234,000 people.
Nakhon Si Thammarat received 447 mm of rainfall since last week.
December is a peak time for tourists to show up in Thailand, and such adverse rainfall will most definitely affect the tourism. Approximately of 32.4 million tourists are expected to visit the country this holiday season.
