High intensity earthquake hits Japan, Tsunami alert liftedAn earthquake of magnitude 6.9 on the Richter scale, as per the USGS has hit the Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures of Japan. Waves as high as 1m had sparked warnings of a Tsunami in the region. The depth of the earthquake was about 30 km. A series of weaker earthquakes had also followed the high intensity earthquake.

The earthquake hit the region at around 6:00 am (local time). The quake occurred at the same area where the 2011 quake had wreaked havoc causing the deaths of over 18000 people. As per reports, minor damages and injuries have been reported. However, no casualties have been reported so far.

Residents had been asked to move to higher areas as a Tsunami alert had been sounded in the region with waves being as high as 3 m. However, the alert was soon lifted from the Japan Pacific coast. However, people have still been advised to stay far away from the shore.

The Fukushima power plant which had witnessed a meltdown during the 9.0 magnitude earthquake during the 2011 earthquake has suffered no damage this time. Strong tremors for at least 30 seconds were also felt in the national capital, Tokyo which lies at least 100 miles away from the Fukushima prefecture. Buildings could be seen swaying in the city.

Several aftershocks can be expected in the earthquake hit region for at least a few days.
