A helicopter crashed in Northwestern Siberia due to bad weather resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people. The Mi-8 helicopter was carrying 22 people and crashed outside city of Novy Urengoy. Due to multiple injuries after the crash, the 19 lost their lives.
The helicopter was travelling from the Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk the Yamalo-Nenetsky region in the town of Urengoy. The rescue teams have found two black boxes of the Mi-8, a voice recorder and a flight data recorder in good condition.
The helicopter is said to be crashed due to poor visibility on the ground. However, other factors including violation of rules of operation and flight safety equipment failure are also not being ruled out.
Three people were successfully saved from the wreckage by emergency workers, while others have been reported to lost their lives soon after the crash. One of the three survivors had reportedly called the emergency department using a mobile phone.
As per the emergencies ministry, the search for the crash site along with the rescue operations was hindered because of fog and difficult visibility conditions. Just about a year ago, a helicopter crash very like this one had occurred in Igraka, Siberia where 15 people were killed.
