Heavy snowfall and cold weather in Turkey

The New Year started with heavy snowfall in several parts of Turkey and is expected to witness few more winter snowstorm along with extremely cold weather.

As many areas across Turkey come to terms with the first major snowstorm of this winter, a couple of storm systems will bring more snow and rain across the country during this week.

The first spell of snowfall affected the central parts of Turkey on Monday. In Istanbul the temperatures will be on the higher side, this will allow the snow to convert into rain. Further to the east of Istanbul, the temperatures will be low enough for snow to occur across the interior of the country.

The second system will be a low pressure which will start affecting on Tuesday. This system will bring mild air which will enable the snow to convert into rain across central Turkey. However, the eastern parts of the country will be cold enough to support snowfall. By Tuesday afternoon upto 6 inches snow is expected in this region.

While much of northern, central and eastern Turkey will experience wintery weather, the southern parts of the country will be milder and rainy. Any additional rain on Tuesday will cause flooding from Antalya to Mersin.

The above two systems are close on the heels of the first major snowstorm of this season, this was predicted by Skymet last week, to know more read here.
