On Wednesday morning, the spell of dense smog transformed the city of Lahore into a smog city, which disrupted the movement of traffic in Punjab, prompting closure of several sections of the motorway.
The M2 motorway which connects Rawalpindi and Islamabad to Lahore was closed from Sial More to Lahore due to zero visibility. Likewise, the M3 motorway, leading to Faisalabad from Pindi Bhattian, was also closed for the same reason.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), moderate level of smog is likely to persist for the next five days or so in districts of Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Okara, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Multan and Khanewal.
As the air quality has been extremely worse, high level of precautionary measures is given to cope with the vulnerability to the atmosphere and to reduce the possible uptick of viral infections and respiratory problems.
Health experts have recommended that people should take extra care to protect themselves from this fatal smog. They are advised to cover their faces with masks while going out. In case of sore eyes, wash them with fresh and cold water.
In addition, traffic jams and fear of accidents may also exist as smog makes the visibility low. In fact, citizens felt it hard to move out of homes and travel as the atmosphere was shrouded by an intense blanket of smog.
