Heavy showers lash Sri Lanka, more in Offing

Sri Lanka Rains

Northeast Monsoon is just around the corner and may make an onset anytime soon. In the past day, Sri Lanka witnessed heavy rain at many places and moderate at a few places. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday, Anuradhapura witnessed heavy rain to the tune 122.4 mm, Maha Illuppallama 60.1 mm, Mannar 32.7 mm, Kandy 32.5 mm, Kurunegala 31 mm.

In the same span of time, Galle recorded 16.1 mm of rain and Trincomalee 11.5 mm, Puttalam 11 mm and Vavuniya 5.2 mm of rain.  These rains can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which persists over Coastal Tamil Nadu.

Now the northeasterly winds will strengthen therefore it is anticipated that good rains are likely to occur over many parts of Sri Lanka. Eastern parts the country will witness intensified rains. Places such as Jaffna, Vavuniya, and Trincomalee will witness good rains. However, during the last 24 hours, many western districts also recorded good rains but rain intensity will be less over the western parts in the coming days.

Rains over the western parts may be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which persists over the southeast Arabian Sea. Sri Lanka normally gets affected by Northeastern Monsoon and hence on and off rains will continue until the end of December.

Mostly eastern parts of the country will witness more rains. The intensity of rain will be less over the interior and western parts. The sky conditions will be cloudy and the day will remain warm and humid, however, morning and nights will be comfortable.
