Heavy rains have been lashing the Sri Lankan nation for quite some time now. In fact, a few regions have been witnessing some intense spells of rains as well. Since the arrival of Northeast Monsoon over the region, rains have increased even more over the island nation.
The last 24 hours have also been rainy enough for Sri Lanka and many parts have witnessed moderate to heavy showers.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Jaffna recorded a whopping 66 mm of rainfall followed by Galle at 40 mm. Other parts of Sri Lanka to have recorded good rains include Batticaloa 27 mm, Trincomalee 17 mm, Pottuvil 15 mm, Kurunegala 5 mm, Anuradhapura 4 mm, and Vavuniya 3 mm.
These rainfall activities can be attributed to the presence of a weather system over Sri Lanka and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal. This weather system which was previously a cyclonic circulation has now intensified into a low-pressure area.
Due to this weather system, moderate to heavy rainfall activity is expected to continue for another 24 hours. In fact, the possibility of isolated very heavy rains over these areas also cannot be ruled out. However, after 24 hours, rainfall activity will witness a drop.
