The weather system which formed in the Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a depression. Presently, the system is centered at Latitude 18.5°N and Longitude 87.5°E. The system is marked somewhere around 470 km SSW of Kolkata, 210 km SE of Paradip and 480 km SSW of Khepupara in Bangladesh.
Now the system is expected to move northwestwards towards Bangladesh. While the system may intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours, the possibility of the formation of a cyclone has been ruled out completely.
Several parts of Bangladesh are already receiving heavy rains for quite some time now. During the last 24 hours, Khepupara recorded good rains of 36 mm followed by Sylhet where 29 mm rainfall was received. Other areas to have received good rains include Hatiya 28 mm, Patuakhah 34 mm, Rangamati 28 mm, Madaripur 23 mm and Bhola 20 mm.
Heavy rains are expected over southern parts of Bangladesh during the next 24 hours. In fact, these rains are likely to continue for at least two days. Light to moderate rains with strong winds are also expected over many parts of Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barisal and Sylhet.
Thereafter, rainfall intensity will reduce as the system is expected to cross Bangladesh during the next 48 hours or so.
