Heavy rains flood parts of northern Pakistan

April 27, 2015 1:39 PM |

rain_in_pakistanA Western Disturbance (WD) has been affecting northern Pakistan since yesterday and has caused moderate to heavy rain in the region. The rainfall had led to flooding in some parts of north Pakistan. This is the first WD which has affected the region since 20th April. Some of the places which have recorded moderate to heavy rain are: Peshawar 59 mm, Kakool 27 mm, Balakot 23 mm and Dir 15 mm.

A Western Disturbance is a low pressure area or a trough over surface or the upper-air in the westerly winds regime, north of 20°N, causing changes in pressure, wind pattern and temperature fields. It is accompanied by cloudiness, with or without precipitation.

The situation is likely to remain the same as more scattered thundershowers are expected in the next 24 hours over the region. After this the WD will clear off and move towards Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, in another incident an intense storm tore through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Northwest Pakistan on Sunday. Rains accompanied with high wind speeds of up to 120 kmph led to approximately 37 deaths. The storm was so intense that it uprooted trees, caused some buildings to collapse and downed electricity poles. Flight operations at Peshawar Airport were suspended during the storm. Peshawar is located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
