Heavy rain and flash floods to ease heat wave in Northeast US

July 29, 2016 3:12 PM |

Rain in New York Northeast US has been witnessing extreme heat for the last few days. High humidity levels have further deteriorated the weather conditions.

However, we now expect some relief very soon. A couple of storms are likely to travel up from southern parts. Thunderstorms and heavy showers might lead to flooding in several parts, extending from the lower Mississippi valley to the Mid-Atlantic. Gradually, Northeast US will also receive heavy rains.

Temperatures will come down significantly over the weekend. Stormy weather systems will bring down temperatures from about 90 degrees Fahrenheit to 80 degrees Fahrenheit in most of the places. Places receiving very heavy showers will see temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. However, we cannot rule out muggy weather conditions due to high humidity.

On Sunday, heavy rain and thundershowers will help eradicate drought-like conditions in few parts of Northeast US.

The weather systems will first visit the northwestern Gulf of Mexico coast and then travel up to the Tennessee Valley across the central Appalachians. The first spell of rainfall will be seen from parts of Kentucky to southeastern Ohio. Rains will be observed over West Virginia, northern parts of Virginia, northern Maryland, central and southeastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, New Jersey, southeastern New York State and southern parts of New England. Air travel will be hampered from New York City to Boston. Rain will reduce over the above-mentioned regions from Friday night to Saturday.

By Saturday evening, the second batch of storms will reach Northeast US from the Ohio Valley. This spell of rainfall will be more extensive than the previous one. Flash floods could be a possibility in some places.
