Heat to seize Plains to Northeast this week

Northeast US

A leap of warm air will seize the eastern United States this week, setting decades-old temperature records at risk of being shattered.

A large portion of the nation extending from the southern Plains to Ohio Valley and into the Northeast and mid-Atlantic will witness temperatures 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit above average during afternoon over the next few days.

These weather conditions can be attributed to a strong area of high pressure over the Southeast, pushing warm air northward for the first half of the week.

The hot air on Monday will develop across the Plains to the Midwest where highs will sweep from 80s and 90s Fahrenheit during the afternoon.

Some towns such as St. Louis, Little Rock, Arkansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee may perhaps beat high temperature records.

During the mid-week, this warm air will move east and by Tuesday and Wednesday it will focus on the areas of Northeast, mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

Some records will be at risk from the Ohio Valley to the Deep South on Tuesday. By Wednesday, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C., may observe records fall as temperatures will reach up to the 80s.

In addition to daytime temperatures being above average, overnight lows each night through the mid-week will be extremely mild, plummeting between the 50s and 60s across the Northeast.

Early this week, with high pressure in control, dry weather with sunshine is likely across the Plains to the Northeast.

However, the dry weather condition is bad news for New England where drought continues are persisting, as rainfall deficits over the past three months range from 4 to 8 inches in most areas.

The next episode of rain may occur during the second half of the week across the Northeast, when a storm system may develop along a slow-moving cold front across the region, bringing a round of soaking rain Thursday through Saturday.
