Northeast Monsoon has remained active over Sri Lanka and adjoining areas for quite a time now. Therefore, several places of the country witnessed good rains. While a few places even observed isolated heavy spells of rain in the past 2-3 days.

Within the span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Jaffna recorded rainfall to the tune of 45 mm, followed by Puttalam at 44 mm, Colombo 25 mm, Trincomalee 20 mm and Mannar 15 mm.

The reason for such weather activities can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is seen over Sri Lanka and adjoining Gulf of Mannar. Another cyclonic circulation can be marked near Lakshwadeep and Maldives area. A trough is also seen extending between these two weather systems.

Due to the effect of these weather systems, moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers are expected to continue over Sri Lanka and adjoining areas during next 24-48 hours.

Places such as Jaffna, Colombo, Puttalam, and Mannar will continue to witness good rains during the aforementioned period.

In the meantime, cyclonic circulation will persist over SriLanka and adjoining areas for another 2-3 days. Therefore, light to moderate rains with isolated heavy spells will continue to lash several places of the country until November 4.

Thereafter, the intensity of these rain and thundershower activities are likely to reduce gradually. Despite this, on and off rains will continue to make an appearance over some parts of the country.

So, we can say that weather is not anticipated to turn completely dry in coming days.
