Germany to enter New Year with rain and snow

Change in weather conditions are expected across Germany which will ease the current heat over several areas.

With this, maximum temperatures are likely to return back normal heading into the New Year and minimums will settle around near or below freezing point.

The persisting high pressure area over the region will start to weaken and move away during the weekend. This will allow colder air to sweep into the country from the North.

This system is expected to hold its grip for long so that most parts of the country can witness dry weather until Sunday.

Maximum temperatures across most parts of Germany including Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg were recorded between 4 to 8 degrees Celsius above normal this week since Sunday.

While 2016 is likely to end on a dry note for Germany, a period of unsettled weather is foreseen for the first couple of days and nights of 2017.

A cold front is expected to dive in from the North around late Sunday. This will spread colder air across the country heading into early next week. Rain and snow is also likely over the higher reaches of central and southern areas of Germany late Monday.

These showers are expected to continue through the middle of the week; however this also depends on the track of a low pressure system which is moving across Scandinavia.

If this system tracks farther north, then Germany may observe rain and snow around Tuesday and Wednesday. However, no change in temperatures are expected during this time.
