Germany gets the taste of early winter

October 15, 2015 3:21 PM |

germanySome parts of Germany witnessed snowfall on Tuesday night, including low lying areas. The Alps, northern Bavaria, Erzgebirge and the Vogtland region witnessed major chunk of snow.

Higher regions getting snow is normal for this time of the year but this time the low lying areas also witnessed snowfall which is unusual. Northwest Germany also received some snowfall and experienced frost, but snow melted quickly as the ground was warm. The northernmost peak of Germany (Brocken) is currently covered under snow. The temperature there is minus 4°C and as a result the snow will not melt. The heaviest snowfall in Germany was experienced in the Alps where around 11 inches of snow was recorded. However, the ski season is not expected to open for a month or so.

Snowfall does not occur every year in the plains. Although it is normal for snowfall to happen in Germany in October, especially in the central uplands. However, this low temperature is very unusual for this time of the year.

In the coming days the temperatures will rise leading to abatement of frosty conditions. This was just a brief taste of what can be expected this winter.
