ind flood CroppedDevastating floods triggered by torrential heavy rains on Tuesday in Jakarta have caused massive destruction in the city. The rain started on Monday morning & after a brief stoppage in the evening it resumed on Tuesday. Around 6000 people have been evacuated from various parts of the capital city and moved to flood evacuation shelters.

In North Jakarta which is the worst affected area, shops and malls were closed and people had to be moved from their homes with the help of rubber boots and horse drawn carriages. The authorities used trucks and four wheelers to help stranded people get transported to nearby commercial areas and higher grounds. The state owned power company PLN has cut the power in order to prevent short circuits & electrocutions.

Flooding in many parts of Indonesia is a common sight during the annual rainy season, which brings transportation system to a halt. In Jakarta flooding is due to bad underground sewage system which causes water logging.

As per the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), the rain is likely to continue for the next 2-3 days which means more misery & grief for the affected people of Jakarta.
