Earlier this month a devastating flood that led to a huge explosion in a gas station in the capital city of Accra, Ghana has caused damage worth $100 million to the country. Ghana’s President Dramani Mahama said that this $100 million is an estimated figure. He also stated that the final report of the disaster that killed around 160 people is being prepared. According to authorities, the gas station explosion occurred when a fuel storage tank was swept by the flood water to a nearby fire. About 36,000 people who have been affected by the flood are not being able to return to their homes.
Meanwhile, in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi a massive flood has occurred killing around 12 people. The floods were so severe that it led to escape of some animals from the zoo. The people have been advised to stay indoors and avoid contact with the animals. Out of the 12 dead three people have been found dead in the zoo itself. The escaped animals include wild animals like tigers, lions, bears and wolves. A hippopotamus was brought under control by a tranquilizer shot in one of city’s main square. Most of the animals escaped when the flood waters rose and they were swept out of their enclosure. Around 200 out of 600 animals have either escaped or are dead and missing.
