Flooding to return to UK as chilly weather persists

February 16, 2016 12:36 PM |

uk floodingA spell of rain will occur over UK on Tuesday and Wednesday thereby, causing new flooding concerns over the region. Rainfall began on Monday night over northern Ireland and Scotland. This spell of rain reached northwest Wales and northern England on Tuesday afternoon.

Moderate to heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds were witnessed in northern Ireland and western Scotland.

The most intense rainfall will occur across northern England and Wales on Tuesday night into Wednesday. The rainfall will spread towards southwest England on Wednesday. The rainfall totals of up to 50 mm is expected over the region with locally heavier downpour of up to 75 mm across Wales and northwest England. These downpours will cause water levels to rise leading to road travel disruption.

The rain system is expected to weaken and stall from Wednesday night into Thursday. This will bring additional rain from Plymouth and London, northward to Manchester and York. For London and river Thames, the rainfall will not be heavy thereby, reducing the chances of flooding. Thames overflowed and broke its embankments last week following heavy rain, leading to flooding throughout London.

As cold air comes in from the north, the rain will convert to snow across the higher terrains of the Midlands on Wednesday night into Thursday. Small accumulations of up to one inch is possible. The cold air will slowly plunge southwards bringing in the potential of some snowfall to southern parts of UK, including Greater London on Thursday.
