Flood threat looms large over Balkans and Turkey

September 21, 2015 2:46 PM |

italyA low pressure system that developed over the weekend in Central Italy will move towards southern Balkans during this week. On Sunday this low pressure only brought spotty thunderstorms across Italy. It will be the eastern side of Italy that will be witnessing heavy rains during the early part of this week.

Areas like southern Serbia into Greece and southeast Italy will have to brace for heavy rains on Monday. On Tuesday the bulk of the rain will shift southeastwards and affect Greece and advance into Turkey. Slow moving thundershowers may cause flooding in low lying areas. Rainfall totals in the region could be between 20 to 40 mm with locally higher amounts of upto 75 mm. There is also a possibility of landslides and mudslides in hilly region.

The long range forecast for the fall season 2015 states that the storm systems will move quickly over Spain and France and slowing down over Italy and southern Balkans which may increase the flood threat across the region. A brief break from rainfall is expected around midweek across the Balkans. The next storm system has already started to move into UK and is expected to bring another spell of rain during the weekend.

As wet spell would soak Balkans early this week, a high pressure system will result in dry and bright conditions across Central and Eastern Europe. For people going to the Oktoberfest in Germany will enjoy a nice Monday. Tuesday will be showery for Germany.
