People in Gaza have been forced to evacuate their homes after flood led to inundation. The floods happened due to Israeli authorities letting out water from several dams in the area. According to an official in Gaza Israel opened sluice gates of many dams without any warning, which caused the water level to rise as much as three meters causing devastation in Gazan villages close to the border.
The flood waters entered more than 40 homes displacing close to 80 families, who are now in shelter homes. The opening of the dams will have a major effect on the local agriculture as well as poultry and animal farms. Livestock and poultry deaths have been reported in some areas. The local authorities have closed the main road which connects al-Mughraqa district and Nusseirat refugee camp south of Gaza city. This is a common practice for Israeli authorities to let out water in Gaza’s direction without any prior warnings due to heavy rains in the Naqab region of Israel.
Last month hundreds of Palestinians had to flee from their homes due to floods & some people had to face freezing temperatures due to winter storm ‘Huda’ which caused widespread rain & snow in the region. An unprecedented 25 cm snow was recorded in the region which is not usual for this area.
