First widespread mountain snow pounds western US

Very cold air, accompanied by soaking rain and heavy snowfall, will continue to affect the western parts of the US. This cold air and snow will prove to be a boost for the ski resorts in the region. The rainfall will be beneficial in drought recovery in some areas. These weather conditions are creating travel related problems.

The temperature will plunge and settle between -9°C and -1°C over much of the interior west as the cooler air arrives.

After the arrival of the chilly air, gusty winds will pick up dust from the Four Corners to the plains of eastern Wyoming. This can cause sudden drop in visibility. These winds could be powerful enough to bring down powerlines in some areas.

This weather condition could lead to the lowest temperatures recorded since last spring season. Some of the cities which are likely to  experience this weather are Los Angeles and Sacramento, California; Phoenix and Flagstaff, Arizona; Las Vegas; Salt Lake City; Portland and Pendleton, Oregon; Seattle and Spokane, Washington; Boise and Pocatello, Idaho; Missoula and Great Falls, Montana; Jackson, Wyoming; and Aspen, Colorado. This will result in coldest nights and chilliest days since April in many locations.

The snowfall will mainly occur in the higher elevations of Wasatch Range and Rockies, during the middle of the week. There can be enough snow to make the roads slushy and snow-covered. Some snowfall could occur in the valley of northern Nevada and Utah, and also the lower elevations of Montana. People in the region have been advised to take precautions while driving.
