The big, killing tidal waves in Japan are known worldwide to ravage country’s islands in three to five minutes and washing away homes. If and when a tsunami or an earthquake strikes Japan, an alarming number of high death toll is expected to come out from there.
Isn’t there a system to tsunami-proof Japan that can save lives of thousands?
Advanced countermeasures is the solution that the country is now planning to adopt. The Japanese government is coming up with a project of undersea cables to closely monitor tsunami on the floor of the sea where there are chances of big earthquakes. The cables will connect Tsunami gauges and other observation devices to transmit data.
On sea beds stretching from off Hokkaido to off Chiba Prefecture, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) is installing tsunami gauges and other devices in 150 locations. The total length of the undersea cables will be 5,700 kilometers.
Operations have already begun in a part of the network that extends for 250 kilometers off the peninsula and date has been provided to local bodies.
