People of Indonesia woke up to a massive earthquake early Friday morning. An influential 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the famous tourist spot Indonesia at 6:30 am (local time) today.
The epicenter of the quake was about 33 kilometers south of the village of Tolotangga, approx. 1,350 kilometers east of Jakarta, claims the US Geological Survey.
The quake lashed the land at around 300 kilometers (190 miles) east of Bali and the depth of the quake was around 72 kilometers off the Sumbawa Island. Though tremors were also felt in neighboring East Nusa Tenggara including the popular tourist destination Bali.
Though the earthquake did not transform much massive causing any fatalities, however, it did lead people to evacuate from their homes fleeing into the streets early Friday morning. Moderate trembling was experienced for near about three minutes on a side of Bali.
As per the USGS, Indonesia is one such country which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as it is positioned on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide. The Ring of Fire was shaken in recent months as well when tremors were felt in New Zealand, Peru, Japan and Indonesia.
A day before, New Zealand’s south Island, Kaikoura was hit by a 5.5 magnitude earthquake. On December 7 itself, Aceh province in Indonesia was shaken by a 6.5 magnitude quake that took more than 100 lives.
