Cyclone Nada gives heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka
The cyclonic storm Nada has crossed Tamil Nadu coast near Nagapattinam as a depression during the early hours of Friday morning.
The system’s effect was witnessed throughout South Peninsular India, particularly over Tamil Nadu coast. Also, moderate to heavy rains have been recorded over northern parts of Sri Lanka.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Jaffna recorded 75 mm of rain followed by Mannar 46 mm, Vavuniya 18 mm, Puttalam 6 mm and Trincomalee 4 mm.
The system will continue to travel in west direction and is likely to weaken further into a well-marked low pressure area. With this, rain will remain confide to South Peninsula.
In the meantime, Sri Lanka will witness clear weather conditions with few clouds hovering over the country. These weather conditions are expected to continue for another two to three days. During this time frame, any heavy rainfall activity is not expected over Sri Lanka.
However, rains will pick up over the east coast of Sri Lanka thereafter.
The Cyclonic Storm Nada is presently churning southwest Bay of Bengal and is lying around 200 km northeast of Kankesanthurai coast. The system is likely to move in a north-northwest direction towards north of Tamil Nadu coast. Further, this system will cross the Indian Coast, close to Cuddalore during wee hours of Friday morning.
With the system’s close proximity to Sri Lanka coast, light to moderate rains have been recorded over many areas of Sri Lanka. Isolated places have witnessed heavy spells as well.
In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Jaffna recorded 36 mm of rain followed by Vavuniya 18 mm, Trincomalee 13 mm, Mannar 13 mm and Anuradhapura 3 mm.
According to Skymet Weather, heavy to extremely heavy rains are expected over northcentral parts of Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours. Rainfall may even reach up to 75 mm -100 mm.
Damaging winds gusting up to 70 kmph are expected to blow over the several areas.
The effect of the cyclonic storm Nada will be light over the southern parts of Sri Lanka. However, light rain may occur over the region, with cloudy sky conditions.
