Cyclone Gita hammered Tonga on Monday night and peaked during the late night hours. The Cyclone was responsible for lifting up roofs off homes, knocking down power lines and trees, bringing down electricity lines, ruining churches and levelling fruit trees and crops vital to the island’s livelihood.
Disaster management teams are working to gauge the extent of the damage both to the life and property. But, the level of damage to crops, homes, vegetation and infrastructure was extremely high.
According to reports, Gita is the worst cyclone to pass along Tonga’s main islands in 60 years because all communications were lost overnight as Gita ripped the roof off the Tonga meteorological office making the entire situation very difficult for everyone.
Now, this cyclone has crossed abeam Fiji and is likely to move west southwards and weaken as it enter into relatively the cold water. Thus, during next 24 to 48 hours the weakening of cyclone will further result in category 3 and category 2.
